There are usually a choice of cal kits in the menus, and if you are using a calibration kit that is not the one the VNA is assuming, then you will get problems. But those should be systematic errors, not random ones like you appear to be getting. 2) Are you using a torque wrench to tighten the connectors? Are you clearning connectors properly? If not, then this will cause random errors, which is the sort you appear to be getting. There's an Agilent application note about connector care. The fact the problems are not repeatable suggests to me that there is a problem with a cable, connector, or you are not practicing the proper connector care. Dave |

The errors that you are seeing are on the order of 52 dB for source match and directivity, and on the order of 0.01-0.2 dB for S21 transimssion tracking. The specifications for those are on the order of 40-46 dB (depending upon frequency) for the reflection errors, and 0.03-0.05 dB for transmission. The problems is almost certainly your cables. You can test the cable by putting a short on the cable, measuring S11 without calibration. Put data into memory and then data-mem (data MINUS memory) and flex the cable. The error is all cable error. To quote a famous reference on VNA measurments: "Cables are a bane to the existence of the RF and microwave engineer. By way of a simile, one can say that cables are like dogs; either they are bad, they’ve been bad, or they are going to be bad, and when they’re good, they only stay good with great care.
