    What I am asking about is if there are any requirements that the Linux I choose must run on an Intel i86/x64 CPU in order for it to work?
I was planning on using a Raspberry Pi3 with an ARM CPU and am trying to figure out if it is a viable choice.
It runs a Debian derivative compiled for ARM.
 
I don't know why you mention the PIC32 series target controller? It should not have anything to bear on my question about which Linux platform is acceptable for MPLAB-X...
As a comparison:
When one downloads a Linux image to install somewhere one has to select the correct architecture for the target machine. On the MPLAB-X download page there is only a selection of Linux 32 and 64 bit.
The RPi3 CPU is 64 bit ARM.

I will drop the possible test for MPLAB-X on a Linux box. The RPi3 is the only such I have in real hardware, all my other Linux machines are VMWare virtual machines and as such I don't think they are suited since there will be yet another layer on top of Windows...
I don't have MPLAB-X, only using MPLAB8 + EmBlocks at the moment. Switched several years back due to the speed issues with MPLAB-X; has it improved since the version 1.30 I tested back in 2012?

If you have unused hard disk space then it is relatively straight forward to shrink your Windows partition and create a Linux partition.
From there I installed Ubuntu and MPLABX 3.45.
My 6 year old laptop was then 'reborn' running MPLABX.
