Thanks for the reply. I have even tried in /tmp and downloads location. But ended up with same error. I thought may be download was corrupted so I tried downloading again and installing the tool. 
 
Nothing has worked as of now.

Hi,
 
I was getting the same error, installed on RHE 6.5 64-bit, so a supported OS. I looked into my installation logfile (~/.Xilinx/xinstall/xinstall_1431439717793.log in my case), and it failed trying to extract a rdi_0157_2015.1_0428_1.xz file into the Vivado_2014.4/.xinstall/xic directory (where I curently do not have write permissions). I deleted my ~/.Xilinx directory and re-ran the installation and it completed without error. I assume somewhere in ~/.Xilinx there is a setting pointing to the previous version of Vivado.

I fought this pretty hard on RHEL6.5 recently with 2016.3 various permutations and attempts to install. Had to run the installer in batch mode (to avoid gui crash from Java update) and extract into /tmp, and install into /tmp before rsyncing to the normal place (/opt/Xilinx). I think the

The path buffer needs to be increased in the installer. This was really annoying.
