    Hello. 
I'm having the same issue, custom board with the WINC1500 module in need of a firmware upgrade. I've been trying to get the Wi-Fi EZConfig Demo to work on my custom board, and have gotten to the point where my board boots up and tells me that the firmware and driver do not match through the console, then fails to handle m2m events. 
 
In Harmony, checking the box in harmony to upgrade the module firmware only results in an unresponsive program after the console outputs the EZConfig header. 
 
I find it hard to believe that only a couple of us are having this issue since this is supposed to be the standard wifi module for new projects, and you don't use demo boards in commercial products....  Any help would be much appreciated.

    Hi Andy,
good news from my side: I managed to update the ATWinc1500 firmware.
Here the steps:
- download the ASF package here: http://www.microchip.com/...ftware-framework-(asf)
- extract the tools and all subfolders from common/components/wifi/winc1500/firmware_update_project/firmware
- put all the tools (with their paths) in a high level folder (e.g. c:firmware); the folder must not have spaces in its name
- connect a serial to USB converter to your PC and to the WiFi module (please note: for me this was the critical step: I used an integrated serial port and a Prolific converter and it didn't work; when I switched to an FTDI converter it all went good)
- be sure you have the converter drivers and that the serial port is present in Devices manager
- run a command prompt with administrator privileges
- set the folder where you put all the tools as the current folder
- run "download_all.bat UART SAMD21 3A0 0 0" (with no quotes)
- wait for the tool to finish
 
I'm not sure that all of the above steps are needed, I just described the steps I followed in order to get the job done.
If you want I can post the tool output, or I can attach the tools extracted from the ASF package; just let me know if you need them.

I have been trying this with an FTDI cable, but it always fails with:
(APP)(ERR)[nm_bus_port_detect][592]Failed to find any COM ports
0 of ports found
 
The FTDI cable shows up in the device manager as "USB Serial Port" under Ports (COM & LPT) in the device manager, and the drivers are up to date. Is there a specific driver you used? I'm at a loss with all of this...

    Hi Andy,
maybe the problem is in how you control the WiFi module. It has to be reset by means of a specific reset sequence. You can find the sequence here (§ 3.1.1): http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/00002378B.pdf
You have to check the functions inside (taken from ASF) and correct the pin references in order to follow your own project.
 
You can check whether the reset sequence is correctly sent to the ATWinc1500 module by connecting a serial terminal software (CoolTerm or something else) to the module serial interface and use 115200-8-N-1 as connection parameters: if all is ok, when you send something via the serial line, the board should reply with an upcase Z letter.
If you are able to obtain this, then you should also be able to update the module firmware.

            I have gone through this before and I think I resolved it.

• First you have to install the tool for updating Winc1500 firmware which will be available in microchipharmonyv2_04utilitieswifi.
  
• Download this firmware "microchipharmonyv2_04appstcpipwifi_winc1500_socketfirmware". By enabling #define FW_UPDATE_OVER_SERIAL        1.
  
• Make sure you disabled any other Demo Example Configurations in app.h.
  
• Run the "download_all_mla_harmony.bat" from the installed directory of tool which we installed in step 1.
  
• For this to work, you need a USB connection with your device.
  
• So that the downloader utility will upgrade the WINC1500's firmware using USB with the help of firmware downloaded in step 2. On your board, the WINC1500 device must be connected with all SPI, CS, EN, reset etc pins properly and make sure the correct configuration is also selected in program.

I have a WINC1500 PICTAIL (which actually has a WINC1510 device on it) and I would like to update it using the EXPLORER16 platform with the PIC32MX795F512L PIM (MA320023). I want to use HARMONY v2.05.01
 
You did not mention in your post a couple of details :
1/ which platform can be used ? (EXPLORER16 + WINC1500 PICTAIL) ?
2/ Is it necessary to change anything on the Harmony Configurator ?  set the number of applications to 0 ?
3/ In your step 2, in which file is the line "#define FW_UPDATE_OVER_SERIAL        1."
4/ In your step 5 you mention : "For this to work, you need a USB connection with your device." USB cable between what and what ?

• There must be a SPI communication between your device(Try to choose the uC given in the sample project from above mentioned path or the uC for which you can easily modify the sample code) and the WINC1500 irrespective of platform.
  
• As per my knowledge, there is nothing to change in harmony generated code except the line mentioned in step 2. That MACRO you can find (ctrl + F) in project (I really don't remember exact which file it may be).
  
• So, USB from microcontroller (with which WINC1500 is connected via SPI) should be connected to your Host PC.
  
  
  • The fw update app communicate as : host PC > USB > Microcontroller > SPI > WINC1500.
    
  • hence the specific firmware you have downloaded from above project will help you to redirect the WINC1500 bootloader command to redirect from SUB to SPI, That's it.
