Good. A great series of machines the 8753. I'm sure Dr_Joel can give you some advice, as he knows one or two things about them - having been a designer of it. 

If you don't have option 006, the 85047A is a bit wasted. You should look at the possibility of getting option 006 added. Hunt around the HP/Agilent Yahoo group for advice on that. 

I assume you have got yourself some cal-kit(s) for it, since otherwise you will not get great accuracy. Check what ones are supported in the firmware. I assume the HP 85032B, which is an N kit, and no doubt some 3.5 mm kits. It is less hassle if your kits are in the firmware, but there is one user defined kit.

After 13 years, it is probably worth getting it calibrated by Keysight, so any problems are bought to your attention. The price of the calibration is not that great, and the calibration certificate is very informative, unlike the one-page cal certificates from most labs. I attach a copy of a recent cal certificate issued by Keysight for an 8720D, which is not a too dissimilar instrument to the 8753B - at least they look very similar, and I suspect the 8720 series was heavily influenced by the 8753 series. 

That said, the 8720D is a more expensive instrument than an 8753B, so the cal costs is more easily

It certainly possible on instruments which have a floppy drive to back up the coefficients. If there is a way to do it on an 8753B, then I guess it will have to be done via the GPIB bus.

I don't think there is a battery, but a "super cap". They do tend to go with age, which results in the instrument losing its settings if you save them.

They are very popular instruments, and pretty trouble free I think, but Dr_Joel will no doubt give you good advice on things to watch out for. 

I don't know if you are aware, but someone has created an TFT retrofit screen that works with the 8753 series. Apparently they work very well, and even add colour to a mono instrument, although I'm not sure of the details.

There is, at least on the 8720D, the ability to blank the screen, which will save the display. That is probably more important on a CRT than an TFT. But I do blank mine if it is not going to be used for some time, but I want it left on to keep it stable. The GPIB command to blank the screen on my 8720D is  "BLAD ON", although you can do it via the front panel too. But I find it easier just to send the commands down the GPIB.

BTW, are you intending connecting it to a machine with GPIB? If so, and it is a Unix system with a National Instruments GPIB card, then I have some software you can have free, although it would need a bit of hacking to work with an 8753. But it can save Touchstone .s1p and .s2p files, as well as set up the instrument. But it is only for Unix systems, and I have no intension whatsoever of porting it to Windows. 

But John Miles has written a program to save data from the 8753 via Windows. I've never used it myself, but apparently it works well. See
