The ground terminal of each SMUs are connected to the same circuit common potential inside of the 4142B mainframe. So, basically, connecting ground terminal is not problem. This time, ground terminal indicates the outer shield of the triaxial cable. The inner shield of the triaxial cable is a guard. Since, its potential is same as the signal line to minimize a leakage from the signal line, do not connect the guard line of each SMU together. Most likely mistake when connecting the terminals of SMUs is selection of inappropriate choice of conversion adapters between triaxal and BNC. Next possible mistake is using the "Sense" line to measure current. "Sence" line is terminal for remote sensing of potential, so the "Force" line have to be used in this case.
