  I am not familiar with either of those USB to RS232 converters.  Check their documentation to see if they have any recommended settings for the baud rate, enk/acq, etc.  If not set the 34970A to a slow baud rate from the front panel and try that.

In general, RS232 often has problems.  See the attached dcoument.  This often shows up with newer laptops in which case the only solution is to try another conputer.

  I'm very sorry.  I was thinking of adding an instrument using one of the other interfaces.  I never tried it before and see now that the Agilent IO Libraries don't just let you add a RS232 instrument.  In any case, you only do that when going directly to the computer's RS232 port, assuming it has one.  

I've never used a USB to RS232 adaptor, but that should come up under USB IO on the PC.   

The RS232 cable I use from my laptop docking station to the 34970A is an Agilent 24542U null modem cable.

  I was able to establish communication with a USB to serial converter, but I'd rather not use that method since we've had timeout issues.

I've added a serial card to our PC and located the proper Agilent serial cable, but I still cannot communicate with the PC. I've checked the settings for the device and the serial port to ensure they match, but still I get nothing.

Going back to your attached txt file, you said +"Did customer 'add' 34970A to IO Libraries under Serial interface (COM1, COM2, etc)?"+ I'm not sure if your response covered my initial query. Are you saying you cannot do that? Since I'm going through a native RS-232 port, I may have to do that.

  First of all I should verify that you have the 34970A RS-232 port enabled.  If you do and if ACE supports the RS-232 interface in your PC, it should find and communicate with the 34970A.  Make sure that the 34970A RS-232 port settings are the same as those for the PC.  At this point, what does the ACE screen show?  Is ther a green check mark next to the 34970A?  That needs to be there to communicate.  If it is you can go to the interactive IO window, send and receice the reply from the "*IDN?" command, or any other SCPI command for the 34970A.  If the green check mark is not there, highlight the 34970A and click on "refresh this instrument".  If that doesn't work, I'm stuck.
