There are two considerations: 1. cold booting the FPGA from the SPI device 2. programming support for in-system programming via Platform Cable (and the Impact tool). UG380 states in several places that 3rd party 'commodity' SPI flash memories will work for cold booting the FPGA. Express support for indirect JTAG programming by the Impact SW tool is limited to a few device families: Numonyx M25P Numonyx M25PE Numonyx M45PE Atmel AT45DB Winbond W25Q These device families do not share pinout/package compatibility, with one exception: Numonyx M45PE and Atmel AT45DB share the same footprint. Note also that most (maybe all?) of these device families are each available in multiple packages. In the last few months, SPI flash memory has been in very short supply. Your choice may be driven by what's available to you. If you have the board space, you should place down several instances of the device you select, in different packages. The last thing you want to hold up your work is a flash memory which is readily available ... in a different package than the one you picked for your board layout. Yes you will need a code module to provide a hardware interface to the SPI memory. SPI hardware interface is pretty simple, and there are instances of SPI master cores readily available. If you search the PicoBlaze Lounge for design examples, Ken Chapman put together an example SPI programmer which tells you everything you need to know. Your first stop should be UG380. Then check price/avail of devices and read the datasheets. Then check the PicoBlaze Ken Chapman SPI programmer package. I think the EDK kit includes an SPI core. If you connect the SPI memory and FPGA correctly, at power-up (what I call 'cold boot') the FPGA will automatically fetch its configuration data from the SPI memory and self-configure.
