I'm not sure what happened, but he phoned me to let me know the tracking generator was no longer working. He was only using the TG output and was not using the input to the SA. We bought a service manual and I have just started going through it. Turning on the SA, the screen showed the following: +System, Alignments, Align Now, Align All+ Performing an +Align All+ doesn't remove the message from the display nor do any error messages show up in the Error History. I tried to align manually and running a +Align Now->RF+ but it gives the error message: +RF Required+ and +Connect Amptd Ref Output to Input+ even though I have a cable connected. I can measure the 50MHz reference signal with another SA so I know that is working. What isn't working is the alignment signal. Throughout the whole alignment process and following +Checking the 21.4MHz Alignment Signal+ in the service manual, I never see any 21.4MHz signal from cable W2/ input to the A3 IF assembly (A3J2). The other SA only measures up to 1.8G so I cannot verify the 1st IF output, but measuring the 2nd IF output, it doesn't show anything at 321.4MHz. So, is the A8 RF assembly pooched? It would make sense since the TG isn't working either. Any suggestions on further tests to run before forking out the cash for a new RF assembly? Thanks, Mike |

If the unit will not perform self alignment it means the input circuitry is damaged including the internal/external RF path switch. You also have 1DS which hopefully was not activated with the Ext. Amp connected. Normally the Tracking generator with low output settings and be used to test an amplifier if it does not have too much gain and exceeds the maximum power out to the RF input. I have seen this failure many times, especially by analyzers being used for Conductive EMC testing. You can replace the receiver module, however, the unit will need to be aligned properly to ensure the unit will meet full specifications. My technician is a pretty reliable person and I doubt he wouldn't fess up to screwing up the SA. I just talked to him again and he stated that he was using the SA to generate a signal into a self-made amplifier circuit so he could inject the signal into various parts of a PCB on one of our products since it was having difficulty passing immunity testing. He was using a scope to monitor the testing and not the RF input since it wasn't going to provide any information regarding the performance of the product. He said the SA stopped "chirping" which he found odd. He cycled the power and everything came back as normal. The next day, no chirping. Maybe someone else came by and played around with it and messed it up. At this point it looks as if the Front End /LO board is the culprit. Can the RF assembly be opened to test or is it pretty much something that needs to be replaced? Mike |

After Dave's comment, I decided to take the bottom cover off the RF module in order to measure the signals from the A8A1A2 FRONT END/LO BOARD to the A8A1A1 REFERENCE/THIRD CONVERTER in an effort to localize the "damaged" section. Upon removing the cover and reconnecting all the cables, I turned the unit on and it started "chirping". I ran all the alignments and now it is measuring signals again. Now I don't recall if this happened before, but the chirping periodically stops for a few seconds but the display is updating with respect to the input signal so I'm not sure if this is normal behaviour. Can someone confirm? I'm at a loss as to what caused the issue. I'll have to go through and make sure all of the RF connections are sound. As my tech said, it just stopped working so I'll have to run it for several hours and see if it stops. After that, I'll need to diagnose the TG as it was originally the non-working component. Mike |
