Try selecting a totally different family device, e.g. PIC18F, and let MPLAB update the firmware in the PK3 to handle that, then switch back to your intended device.

    Have you tried a different family of PIC to cause a download of new firmware? It could have become corrupted somehow, and reflashing it might cure the problem. I'm not sure if there is a way to force a reflash directly.

    The last set of messages from the PicKit3 (in post #10) indicate that you are talking to the PicKit3 OK but that the connections between it and the MCU are not right.
Check the PGC/PGD/MCLR lines (they can have different names depending on the MCU) lines are properly connected and there are no extraneous devices connected (e.g. capacitors).
It can see the Vdd and Vss on your board OK.

If it is a genuine PICkit3, and if it is damaged, Microchip will probably replace it for free.

Sorry to say that unless you purchased your PICKit3 directly from Microchip in the USA and you are using it in the USA it's not likely you have any warranty.

Microchip seems willing to replace ICD3, RealICE or PM3 device programmers forever. For PICkits, Starter kits, demo boards etc. Microchip does not seem to be so generous with free replacements.

If your PICkit3 is broken buy a new one, a REAL one not a clone, then at least you can get an accurate schematic and have a chance at fixing it yourself the next time you smoke it.
