    Does the on-board PICKit work?

    The PICKit On Board works fine.  I tried an external PICKit 3 and it fails to connect and never reads the chip ID.  The ICD4 reads the ID, programs memory, and then fails that last verification step where I'm guessing the debug executive resides.

    Just found where the Device Support file is.  Fine print on the ICD4 page.  "no support for this device".  D**n.  Pounds head against desk.  Well it says the ICD3 works so I'll pull the old one I have out.  Thanks for the help.

    I seem to have the inverse problem of what is mentioned above on April 03, 2018.  Specifically, I can program the board using an ICD3, but have not yet been able to use the on-board PICkit.  Any suggestions?
 
I found a different post describing my problem: i.e., successful ICD3 / unsuccessful on-board PICkit programming.  In that post a question is asked if the jumpers are correct for the on-board PICkit.  The response was they couldn't see any relevant jumpers for on-board PICkit.  I agree.

Thank you so much for responding. 
Yes indeed, I did select the on-board PICkit in project properties.  I believe the problem is solved.  In the "different post" I mentioned, there was suggestion of a possible problem with the USB cable.  I tried a different USB cable, and it worked.  
 
In answer to your question, however, there were two "Error Conditions" observed, but not an error message to my recollection.  They were:
1) When I would click the green "Make and Program Device" down arrow, nothing would happen, and no error message.  I just verified that by unplugging the USB cable and indeed that is what happened.
2) The other observed "Error Condition" is that when I clicked the "Make and Program Device" arrow, the Output window would indicate the Make and Program sequence was progressing, however no successful download of the program achieved.  The small window at bottom right of screen wold continuously indicate some level of progress, continuously.
 
At any rate, I am now able to program using the on-board PICkit.

    If you don't get the usual messages after successful compilation and loading (the hex file), either no debugger is connected or - - - you experienced that.Learning from trouble with cheap USB cables, I have a small set of high-quality cables that reliably do their job.
 
If you want something to grin: today, my my PICkit had "lost" the setting to supply the target (maybe because inbetween I had used some PKOB that doesn't have this option). "... VDD ..." Cost me 3 attempts until I realized what really might be wrong. Still only minutes...
