The analyzer was working perfectly, passing all the Confidence tests just prior to the battery failure. The reason for this error is, according to the manual, "During the CAL AMPTD routine, the insertion loss of a resolution bandwidth filter, relative to the amplitude of the 3 kHz resolution bandwidth filter, was greater than 2.2 dB." Is there a magic "-37hz" code that can override this? or maybe something else I can do? I cannot store the cal data without passing the AMPTD CAL, so the device is useless to me. I must have run this procedure a 100 times but never thought of the internal impedance. Once I did what you suggested the self CAL ran without any issues. The confidence test passes. It is working great and the frequency accuracy is spot on when measuring my other RF sources. Two additional questions: REF UNLOCK keeps on flashing on the screen. This is something the instrument only did when I had very narrow spans in the past, but never during normal use. Is this another calibration step? The manual does not say anything useful about this. "Show Options" reports the model as a 8591A while the front panel says it is a 8590B. Will this affect the workings of the instrument and how can this be changed to reflect the right model info? I also notice that since I reran the calibration "Show Options" does not list option 001 anymore (I set Z to 50 ohms as a Power On default, so not sure if it is related). K |

If I remember correctly these instruments would identify as an 8590B or 8591A depending on whether or not they had the A24 Counterlock board assembly or not. Also, only instruments with the counterlock assembly would give a reference unlock message. So, for some reason your 8590B thinks it has an A24 Counterlock assembly. I guess the first thing to do would be to see if someone has installed one into it. It is a shielded board located on the bottom side of the instruments and it covers over more than half of the CPU assembly. Also, does the instrument have a front panel memory card reader located just below the display? The ribbon cable for the memory card reader connects to the same connector on the CPU board as the counterlock assembly. If you do have a card reader try unplugging the cable from the CPU board (with the instrument turned off of course) and turn it on and see if it helps. There could also be some bent pins on this CPU board connector. I hope something here helps... Mike |
