Looking at the PCB, it seems there is a fairly lengthy transmission line before the open or short. So the offset delays are going to be much longer than those in the Agilent 3.5 mm calibration kits, which are 29.243 ps for the opens and 31.808 ps for the shorts. N9923A comes with "CalReady", a factory cal up to the test ports that is quite good. Now if you add jumper cables or adapters, then of course you need to calibrate, especially if delay is a parameter you are measuring. If you're just looking at magnitude, if you use adapters or cables with excellent match, maybe then you can get away without a cal. Do you have the QuickCal option? that does not need a cal kit (maybe just a load) and can also be helpful. Alternatively, you can define your own cal kit with your own standards and then upload that kit to FieldFox using Data Link software. I don't have QuickCal since apparently it's not appropriate for SMA connectors, which is what I typically use, and some of the 4-in-1 cal kits are the same price and seemed like a better choice on a limited budget. But it didn't even cross my mind to connect directly to the VNA with just a good quality Type N to SMA adapter and CalReady, which will be far less intrusive than the cable while I'm waiting for the cal kit in 5 weeks. It's a shame TI doesn't provide the timing delays on those CCANTENNA-DK kits, though, even if they'll probably never be as good as a dedicated cal kit. But most cal kits are so prohibitively priced that a low cost interim solution would be useful to a lot of smaller companies with limited tools budgets (who, like me, would probably consider the N9923A). |
