The correction requires the firmware to know all raw 4 S-parameters, and so it must measure all 4 (S11 and S21 in the forward direction, sourcing from port 1, and S12 and S22 in the reverse direction sourceing from port 2). So you will see the analyzer switch continuously. Perhaps you can tell why you don't want it switching continuously? In general, you cannot stop it for normal operation. There are ways to stop it, but they tend to be special cases. |

I am concerned with continuous switching due to wear & tear of mechanical RF switch. If it is normal (no wear & tear for RF switch) to have continuous switching when using full 2 port calibration then I should have no further question though I don't like to see direction sign switching back and forth while working as it is quite irritating. I need to test return loss/insertion loss/isolation of a 2 port isolator. So full 2 port calibration is the only way to do the job. In some cases you can set attenuators or other mechnical switches to different settings for different ports or channels, and if that situation occurs the firmware always places the analyzer in "test set hold" mode and only sweeps in one direction. So it is not really possible to put the VNA in a mode to continously switch mechanical switches. There is no limit to the switching of the electronic switches as there is no wear-out mechanism. If the flashing lights bother you (first time I've heard such a thing, but whatever) I could recommend you put a small piece of electrical tape over them so you don't see the flashing, or masking tape if you you want to still see the indicator but not have it so bright. |

There is another annoying aspect to this "problem", which needs a slightly higher tech approach than the sticky tape. After you have done a 2-port calibration, if you then want to measure one-port devices, it takes twice as long, as the 8720D is performing both a forward and reverse sweep despite you are only using one. As of about 6 months ago I was advised this was the same on the PNA too, although there were plans to give the user the option to not perform the reverse sweep. Joel said it should be possible to stop this on my 8720D, but it required downloading the calibration coefficients, getting the VNA to think it had done a one-port calibration, then uploading the calibration constants. It sounded a lot of work, so I never done this. But for wear out, this is not an issue. I just stuck my hand in my draw and pulled out an Agilent 874B DC-18 GHz mechanical relay. A quick check of the Keysight website shows it is rated for greater than 1 million cycles. So IMHO it would not have hurt too much if the VNAs which have mechanical relays (an option on the 8720D), did allow a *limited* number of switching cycles. If you could do it for 100 cycles, it would take a very long time to wear out the relay. Dave |
