Some VGA monitors will sync on green, but its anyone's guess how you find out which one. I would suggest trying other monitors. You might find one that works. I think there are various adapters around to do this too, although I don't know what works well, and what does not. You could try a capacitor between green and the sync inputs of the VGA. I don't know if its a horizontal sync (pin 13), or a vertical sync (pin 14) that you would go to. I'd be tempted to try 1 nF, if that does not work try 10 nF, if that does not work try 100 nF, and if that does not work try 1 uF, and perhaps go to 10 uF. I think I would give up at that point if you can't get it to work. I've never done it myself, but I'm pretty sure I have read about people making simple adapters to get the sync pulse out using nothing more than a capacitor. You could try the HP/Agilent Yahoo group https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/hp_agilent_equipment/info There are a *lot* of people there keep old equipment alive. An 8753D is modern by the standards of some equipment people alive there! I mate of mine bought an adapter which allows the output from a HP 70000 modular measurement system to be put on a PC. The nice thing about that is that it is possible to capture the image, and so generate reports from it. I don't know if the HP 70000 series uses 3 x BNC, but I suspect it does. I can't easily get around the back of mine to see. But I know his adapter was quite pricy, but he thought it worthwhile the fact he could capture a screen shot and copy/paste to a report for a customer. > Thanks If you don't get any more informative response here, I would certainly try the HP/Agilent Yahoo group, but I'd also be trying other monitors, and sticking a capacitor around to try to get the sync pulse into the monitor. I found a 3571A monitor and hooked it up to the 8753D and got video on the monitor; the 3571A monitor (if you know) has a Video input (one RCA jack); seeing that I am not suppose to borrow test equipment from other stands, I tried to source one from the internet; I was only able to find an 3571D monitor; I said, why not, it should work; it came in the other day and I found a video cable hang out of it (9-pin d-type male connector); I was able to quickly purchase connector adaptors to adapt to the 9-pin connector; I'm thinking that I need to just jump pin#2 (green) to the V-sync (not sure which pin that is on the 3571D connector yet); before I try that, I should try jumping it with a cap; NOT a SHORT, correct? I took video feed from the BNC jacks on the rear of the unit. This has the same RGB (with green on sync) and 25.5kHz horizontal sync. You can use a GBS-8220 arcade display converter board to convert the BNC outputs to standard VGA up to 1024x768 (possibly even one step higher res but I can't remember). This board is in the $30 range and you need to supply power. This lets you drive almost any modern display but skip the following paragraph to get to the caveat. I drove an 8" flat panel 1028x768 LCD panel (with VGA input controller board) with this converter and after much work, had display quality that was excellent. The display presentation was actually better than a brand new CRT I had installed in the unit (the original Sony OEM Trinitron). Smith charts were circles and the soft keys were lined up with their text also. It did take me some hours to get the GBS-8220 to where it would handle the video properly. It did become essential to add a sync separator IC to pull out the sync on green. I think I used the LMH1980. The display was also going to sit nicely right up against the rear of the existing bezel (with the formed CRT "bezel" removed). Unfortunately, I totally ran out of time to take this further and with a new CRT in my unit, didn't really need it. So, to drive a standard VGA, this board works but needs a small PCB (or breadboard) with a sync separator chip and a few caps. Keep in mind that the resolution of the original internal display was the same as some early Apple monitors. Just food for thought, not sure how easy it would be to drive one. Dennis |
