One idea is to post a question at the Yahoo HP_Agilent user group as some people have old parts; but this was a pretty unique product upgrade that was sold in low volume. I'm very grateful to read them. After experimenting with the 1650B and 1652B system and pvtest applications on the 1650B, disconnecting the oscilloscope cable and observing errors reported, etc., it looked like they're all the same under the hood. The power on self test in the ROM do not try out the HPIB or oscilloscope, either (pvtest seems required to test the scope board.) It's very useful to have confirmation that there shouldn't be any modifications to the board. One firmware update for the 1630 series (ours is from 1984 and still works and is used often) required cutting a trace and adding a wire. Our attempted upgrade almost worked with a very small part of the whole picture preventing the system from booting. The RAM chips are no longer made, but I purchased some recycled chips for a few dollars. After adding sockets and bypass capacitors to the unpopulated footprints in the 1650A, it was reassembled and it worked fine. Then the ROMs were switched with the 1650B set and the machine did not pass the RAM test. Then the RAM chips were installed in the new sockets, and the machine passed the RAM test. It passed all the self-tests for the acquisition, threshold, etc. too. The one it failed is the disk test and it wouldn't boot. Something was changed about the disk controller. Switching back to the 1650A 1.00 ROM set, all worked fine. So, the memory address or the glue logic for the disk controller changed, or a different chip may have been used? The disk drive will seek to track '0' when the machine turns on, but that is the only response ever seen from the disk drive. After that the LED won't light and the spindle never turns. Hopefully the right ROMs will allow the machine to read the disk. By the way, even if HP's old device programming infrastructure is long gone, perhaps a corporate librarian would be able to find data files for old parts. It's probably easiest to try to find one in the wild first, and I'll do that. Thanks again & Cheers! |
