Those other post show that this problem is over a year and a half old!  Although, they do talk about font scaling, which mostly seems to be ok.  It's mainly the tiny icons that make it unusable.
 
There are plenty of google results for this problem in Netbeans, but none of them seem to do anything for MPLABX.
The most common suggestion seems to be:

• Open C:Program FilesNetBeans 8.0etcnetbeans.conf
  
• Change -J-Dsun.java2d.dpiaware=true to -J-Dsun.java2d.dpiaware=false
  

I tried this with the mplab_ide.conf file, but it doesn't seem to have any effect.

    I looked in "D:microchipharmonyv1_09utilitiesmpfs_generatorsrc" and loaded it into Netbeans
It took me considerable time to change all the defaults so everything was visible on my 4k monitor.
I conclude from this exercise the problem is in the defaults used in netbeans and the libraries are not 4k aware.
Many of the values are hard coded.
I hard coded everything to be larger and it works.
It is possible to make it dynamic but would take me quite a bit more time as I am not a netbeans aficionado.
If the X programmers were asked to make everything 4k aware and given the budget it is possible to make X 4k useful. I can only hope some future version of netbeans becomes 4k aware and X is migrated.
I am starting to see screens larger than 4k, I do hope when netbeans changes it takes into account the possibility of larger screens.
If the Microchip testers had Windows 10 machines and 4k screens maybe it would happen sooner.

    Hi,
i'have the exact same problem! And i think it's a huge problem. There's a rising number of notebooks and monitors with >1080p or 4K screens and MPLAB-X is totally unusable on these machines. Microchip, can you tell us if theres already someone working on this problem?
