  Hi -

If the High Voltage Adjustment is not performed first, some of the Display Adjustments will not be as well-optimized. After you have verified that the High Voltage Adjustments have been done, do the Display Adjustments, especially the Deflection Adjustments. When doing the deflection adjustments, it might help to reduce the intensity somewhat, especially for the DGTL X GAIN and DGTL Y GAIN adjustments. These are the adjustments where you are trying to make what are actually two lines converge into one. If the intensity is too high, it is more difficult to get this adjustment correct. These adjustments, along with the START BLANK and STOP BLANK adjustments, will impact how those underlines appear. 

If these adjustments are unable to make the underlines appear correct, you might have a problem with the CRT itself. This can be a costly replacement, assuming the part itself is available.

  Belatedly, thanks for the suggestions. I'll check the HV setting when I get a chance - the rest of the display adjustments went very easily and the display is generally excellent apart from these lines.

If the graticule is fullscreen without the softkey words, the trace is perfect in the areas where the lines go so I'm driven to thinking it's something in the character generation.
