I am now in the early stages of a new design improving on the original design and after researching into whether there are any cheaper / better Xilinx devices on the market I've noticed that the Spartan 6 range is now marketed as the 'Low End' offering and Spartan 3 no longer appears on the website as a product range (Apart from the automotive grade). This concerns me a little that the Spartan 3 is not being commercially marketed and I'm unsure if this should be used for new designs ? The smallest device in a QFP package from the Spartan 6 range is the XC6SLX4; however when I compare pricing this is twice the price as the Spartan 3 device which is positioned in the same range (I understand the Spartan 6 is a superior device), therefore it's not an equivalent cost alternative If anybody has any advice on this it would be appreciated Thanks in advance Lee A Smith |

Devices are discontinued when the volume gets too low or the fab no longer offers the process. Xilinx gives one year notice of discontinuance for last time buys and another year to complete the last time buys. I don't think you'll find a newer device in the VQ100 package. I seem to recall that only the VQ144 is offered for Spartan 6, so this may also be a board space issue. Going forward, unless the yet to be specified Spartan-7 comes in a QFP, it looks like its all BGA packaging. If your product life cycle is short enough to deal with the 2 year max notice / life time buy, then you're probably best off sticking with the part you have. -- Gabor |

The S3A part you are using is quite popular. At some point, you will need to improve/upgrade, so I would look at Spartan 7 when it is announced. S3A/S3E/S3 business is robust, so it is good you think about this now. Decide when you will need to revisit this based on what you learn.
