AC97 Controllers are just slightly different.
And there's a Reference design for the ML505 Board which might be helpful.

Of course you need to adapt the UCF file, at least. Maybe more.
 
The details of the register settings can be found in the datasheet of the AC 97 device that is mounted on the ML501 Board. 
 
Please keep in mind that sound inputs are DC-decoupled, so only AC measurement is possible.

Hi,
with the AC97-Input you can convert Signals between (about) 20Hz to 20 kHz.
Of course the voltage level is quite reduced to what is allowed for sound inputs. (see the datasheet)
 
There is a ADC in the FPGa, as part of the System Monitor and is Connected to J15 on your Board.

There are also some threads in the forum about this topic.
Make sure that you have some save and well behaving signal conditioning circuit in front of the System Monitor input to avoid damaging the FPGA.
 
Depending on the ammount of data you are going to sample, the internal BRAMs might be sufficient, or you can use the external DDR RAM of the board.
 
The transfer to the PC is just another common problem.
From the most simple RS232 interface to a full featured LAN interface you can choose whatever you like and can design.
 
Once transfered to the PC the problem of displaying the data is not related to FPGAs.

Hi,
the basic settings of some AC97 controller should work for both devices since the registers and interface are defined in the AC97 specification.
However there can be slight differences for extended features , which should be checked for by comparing the device datasheets.
 
 
Chipscope can be helpful. It is used like any logic analyzer (LA) , just that is applied inside the Chip, which can't be done with an ordinary LA. Using it needs some training. You better begin with some simple circuit and google for - chipscope tutorial - to get in touch with it.
 
Using the LAN interface is some big thing if you are going to do it all by yourself.
But there is some shortcut.
You can setup some Microblaze system with the EDK which brings all the needed IP cores and then can be programmed in C with hte SDK. With some luck you find some reference design for your board that has it all (even the AC97 controller) .
Then your problem is mainly reduced to programming of an embedded  microcontroller sysrtem.

Hi,
assuming that you have set up your design and ucf file properly you just need to do the obvious.
 
Get some MP3 player or other audio source (even your PC may be used) and connect it to the Line in of your ML 501 Board.
Then take some headphone or active PC-Speaker set and connect it to the Line out of your ML 501.
 
With the volume settings to maximum (the original design for the Atlys board used switches) you should be able to hear something. With headphones on Line out it might be slightly damped due to impedance mismatch.
 
If you want to use the Headphone jack too, you might need to add the settings of the HP-volume control register to your design.

The Atlys design (if you have used it) is just some starting point providing a basic function with a loose coding style.
It can be optimized and expanded in many ways. Especially if you want to use some feature that is not provided in the original code (e.g. using the HP-output).
 
Another simple test could be to connect some MSBs of the sound data coming from the AC97 chip to some LEDs too.
You should see them flickering as you crank up the volume of your sound source.
