The transfer to the PC is just another common problem. From the most simple RS232 interface to a full featured LAN interface you can choose whatever you like and can design. But there is some shortcut. You can setup some Microblaze system with the EDK which brings all the needed IP cores and then can be programmed in C with hte SDK. With some luck you find some reference design for your board that has it all (even the AC97 controller) . Then your problem is mainly reduced to programming of an embedded microcontroller sysrtem. It can be optimized and expanded in many ways. Especially if you want to use some feature that is not provided in the original code (e.g. using the HP-output). Another simple test could be to connect some MSBs of the sound data coming from the AC97 chip to some LEDs too. You should see them flickering as you crank up the volume of your sound source.
