We have model # (engineering), marketing description, and ordering # respectively.
 
The original "Platform USB" had several variant:
DLC9: original
DLC9LP: low power
I believe both of these used HW-USB to order
DLC9G: Pb-free & low-power, new ordering # of HW-USB-G (the "G" stands for Green or Pb/Lead free)
 
That was replaced with the red DLC10/Platform USB II.
You'll see DLC10 mention in the datasheet and the picture I povided above.

That is the older u*** programming cable.  It is replaced by a newer one from Xilinx, or Avnet, or your local Xilinx distributor.

I see a number of old ones for sale on eBay....
 
A JTAG programming cable is pretty universal.  They also support he master or slave serial programming modes for Xilinx FPGAs.
 
Why did they say you can not use the new cable?  Perhaps because they have not tried it?
 
Contact your distributor if you have specific questions, or ask your local Xilinx FAE....

I was not able to find anything on eBay (searched for "xilinx dlc10" and got nothing). I do see other models but was not sure if they would work.
 
I do not know why they think another tool will not work for this. At the very least, if I run into any trouble, it will be harder for them to help me remotely if the software, driver, or hardware connections are different in any way from their setup.
 
But, if you are confident that the new model should cover any download that the DLC10 can do, then I might be willing to give it a try. Are the software UI and cable connections similar enough that they should be able to walk me through it (based on their DLC10 setup)?

If you search for "Xilinx USB Cable" on eBay,  you will see many 3rd party "clones" of the Xilinx USB Platform Cable selling for $40-$50 US (including shipping from the Far East).
 
I do not know Xilinx' official position on these clones.  Perhaps they are considered IP pirates, such as those who copy and sell movie DVDs.  Possibly Xilinx benignly ignores them, on the premise that Xilinx' interests are served by selling as many FPGAs (rather than USB Platform Cables) as possible.

Pretty simple:  we do not support what we do not sell.  So, anything that is bought outside of Xilinx distribution, or from a non-Xilinx maker, is their problem, not ours.
 
I only mentioned eBay becasue they often have older, and used equipment for sale.  But, since the sellers are completely unknown to me, I am not suggesting that any of those items for sale are good, or even legitimate.  I just noticed they popped up in a goodle search for the cable number.

The for sale cable pod (red box) did not have the DLC-10 in the webpage, so we have to rely on Ed and Barrie who know what they are talking about (as they obviously do know what they are talking about).
 
I had one of those red pods that I had been using with my XUPV5 pcb, but I gave it away (with the pcb) to someone who needed it recently (as I was not using it any longer).  Otherwise, I would have looked at it, and read off all the numbers on it.

I'm not qualified to provide the official Xilinx position here. Just an engineer... ;) Not legal or marketing.
 
but my personal opinion is:
-some of these are clearly clones and marketed as such. Some of these are are fakes (ranging from obvious to "pretty good") that may fool someone who doesn't know what to look for. And present themselves with an otherwise valid looking logo, part #, etc.
-if this is a personal project and you don't mind the risks, that is your decision
-I wouldn't risk a commercial project to something that is not supported to save a few hundred dollars on a programming cable - especially when it is still in production and readily available.

The are multiple discussions here and other places on "counterfeit" devices, assemblies, etc. And then inevitable ramifications that sometimes appear to occur.
 
My son and I found was otherwise appeared to be "Sharpie" markers at a flea-market with a "too good to be true" sticker price not long ago until close insepction (about 3 seconds later once we bent down) revealed it was clearly not - though designed to clearly look it. But my expectations and risk adversion for a marker is likely different than other items more important in my personal or professional life. Worst case there was i was out $2 for something that likely has little to go wrong - even it if isn't permanent, bleeds, leaks, etc. But we still didn't' buy it out of principle though we both had a good laugh.
 
There is some interesting literature there on remarks, reconditioned, and other items which run the gamut from surplus to obvious fakes.
 
Caveat emptor.

Do Xilinx tolerate the cable cloners, or do Xilinx consider them IP thieves who are stealing food from the family table (so to speak)?  If they are considered thieves, then I will not promote them in these forums.

We do not consider them "theives."  But, we certainly do not like to have folks who make the same tools that we do, and under-cut us, with no support.  Even though it is unsupported by us, we will often end up spending our time, and money on these tools (like I am doing right now).
 
Not sure there is anything in these pods that is patented.  Reverse-engineering is perfectly legal, so there is nothing I will (or can) do to prevent someone from making a copy of a USB priogramming cable.
 
And, even if there is something patented in there, or a trade secret, it isn't likely anyone here is going to get excited.  After all, if they are programming Xilinx devices, they must have bought them from us.....(as you already pointed out).
 
I am not a marketing person, and I am not a lawyer, so this represents my own personal opinions on these subjects.  One can go to the legal pages on xilinx.com, and read what is the official position (or hire a laywer to interpret it).
 
 
Now, if someone claims to have cloned our device -- then the wheels will begin to roll to shut that down.  But, no one has ever cloned anything we have made (in the silicon realm), as that is just crazy hard (impossible).
 
There are folks who take scrap Xilinx devices, and clean them up, and sell them for new.  If they leave the serial numbers on them, we know where they came from, and who we sold them to.  If they invent new serial numbers, we know they are bogus, and re-marked.  This last category of counterfeiting is a serious problem, and one we actively work to suppress as it reflects poorly on our superior reliability record.
 
We encourage all disposal of our old devices to use shredders (and obey the proper environmental laws in doing so).
