But my expectations and risk adversion for a marker is likely different than other items more important in my personal or professional life. Worst case there was i was out $2 for something that likely has little to go wrong - even it if isn't permanent, bleeds, leaks, etc. But we still didn't' buy it out of principle though we both had a good laugh. Even though it is unsupported by us, we will often end up spending our time, and money on these tools (like I am doing right now). Not sure there is anything in these pods that is patented. Reverse-engineering is perfectly legal, so there is nothing I will (or can) do to prevent someone from making a copy of a USB priogramming cable. And, even if there is something patented in there, or a trade secret, it isn't likely anyone here is going to get excited. After all, if they are programming Xilinx devices, they must have bought them from us.....(as you already pointed out). I am not a marketing person, and I am not a lawyer, so this represents my own personal opinions on these subjects. One can go to the legal pages on xilinx.com, and read what is the official position (or hire a laywer to interpret it). Now, if someone claims to have cloned our device -- then the wheels will begin to roll to shut that down. But, no one has ever cloned anything we have made (in the silicon realm), as that is just crazy hard (impossible). There are folks who take scrap Xilinx devices, and clean them up, and sell them for new. If they leave the serial numbers on them, we know where they came from, and who we sold them to. If they invent new serial numbers, we know they are bogus, and re-marked. This last category of counterfeiting is a serious problem, and one we actively work to suppress as it reflects poorly on our superior reliability record.
