When you have doubts about what you are doing it is good to have assurance about certain aspects of your testing... Just putting all the debug facilities of MPLab to one side, Simply select your PIC device off the 'Configure' menu. MPLab is now 'interested' in your device. Simply select PICkit 3 off the 'Programmer' menu. MPLab now wants to communicate with a PICkit 3 which has your device connected to it. Just look at the output window, a PICkit 3 tab appears and if you plug in a PICkit 3, it immediately shows its status. It will update it for your device if needed. If you unplug, you are informed it is unplugged. If you plug the PICkit 3 into your breadboard header it will immediately inform you of the device code and if it is correct. If the code is 00000 this is normally a wiring error. On errors, MPLabX just appears to say 'can't find device' and folds its arms in a huff! Try a PIC33FJ128GP802. Just use the internal FRC. When you get more knowledgeable you'll find how to spin this 7.3 Mhz up to 79~80MHz. T Yorky (Note. Once you have your bread board working.
