When I got my 1158A, I had a similar problem. When I connected it to the scope, it immediately popped up a box telling me that it was incompatible. However, upon disassembling the probe, I discovered that it had a blown 5v regulator. After replacing it and reassembling the probe, the scope immediately recognized it and it worked perfectly. In this case, however, the box pops up after several seconds, not immediately. And the scope seems to hang between when the probe is conneted before the message pops up. Also, the probe itself also seems to be functional. I disassembled the probe and experimented with inserting subsets of the pogo pins and trying it on the scope. It seems that when the center three pogo pins are removed and the probe is connected to the scope, the scope doesn't recognize it at all (it acts like there is no probe connected), but the trace on the scope display reflects the output of the differential amplifier in the probe, indicating that the analog portion of the probe works (e.g. it isn't shorted like the 1158A was when I got it). Is there anyone who knows more about the autoprobe interface that might be able to shed some light on to what might be going on here? I found a forum post on the EEV blog that indicates the probes use a serial EEPROM for identification, and the board inside the 1130A has an ST 24C02 I2C EEPROM on it. Is there any possibility that is contents might have gotten corrupted and simply reprogramming the EEPROM might render the probe fully functional again? |

I don't think I need a whole new probe, just a rewrite of the I2C EEPROM which should be doable with any microcontroller that happens to speak I2C. I did try connecting a logic analyzer to the probe ID I2C pins for both the 1130A and the 1156A probes. For my 1156A, it reads out the EEPROM once. For the 1130A, it reads it out at least 3 times before giving up. I also wrote a small program on an AVR board to read out the memory contents. They don't look obviously corrupted, but I have no idea what to look for. |
