I am working on 33 KV cable networks. A cable section between two substations normally > 5 Km in United Kingdom. I am trying to find fault due to partial break down in the insulation of the cable. These type of faults will not break the cable immediately. Some times complete break down may occur after several months, some times next day , some times next moment from the partial breakdown.All depends upon the discharge magntiude measured as a result of partial breakdown inside the insulation.
Thse partial breakdown occurs at both half cycles of power frequency cycle. As a result of partial break down very steep pulses (rise time < 100 ns ) were induced in the neighbouring conductor of the cable from the insulation. These pulses were captured using digital storage oscillscope with aid of VHF inductive couplers calibrated in charge (pico coulombs) .
.These measurements are done at VHF band. So noise will be a big problem to extract the useful information from the data acquired. Signal processing techniques ( wavlets , EMD ) are used to process those signals
To locate the discharge source , TDR method is still used . But this will help only in off line.There is no guranatee that one can identify the reflected pulse since impedanace change is not guaranteed in on-line measurements. Also dynamic range of the data capturing device should be much higher to capture these reflected pulses.
I am designing data acquisition system for measuring at both cable ends with accurate time base alignment in both systems .These systems are around 5 km apart (one at each cable end). By doing the data acquisition at same time ( 10 ns resolution ) , I am speculating that I can find the fault location with reasonable accuracy. I hope the unceratnities caused by TDR is mostly removed
