    Thanks folks for your several responses which seem to vary in their enthusiasm for "X". Frisen - I have nothing against "refractor" except I haven't a clue what it does and it's a made-up word (and I am no Capt. Kirk).
 
I wonder what % of Microchip's business is with small-volume enthusiasts and whether they could justify spending the money to make their product friendlier to such customers. They make a wonderful line of silicon products but seem to keep introducing new aids and supporting softwares/hardwares which are never fully debugged before they become extinct.
 
Given the profusion of different home-based operating systems they need to cater for, this observation might be unfair however.

    Hi,
In MPLAB X, everything that was easily accessible in MPLAB 8, is hidden in different places.
 
In: 'Dashboard' panel, the lower left part of window, there is a: Nuts Bolts and Spanner, icon that open 'Project Properties' which is a big dialog box with lot of settings, including optimization settings, and definition of Include file search list.
 
In 'Projects' panel, the upper left part of window, there is a tree structure of the project.
Each node there have a Pop-up menu under the righthand mouse button, including the root: IC-package icon with project 'Package', 'Clean' and 'Close'.
 
'Refactor' is just a menu header for some 'Rename' and similar functions.
More useful is: 'Window' menu, which hide 'Debugging >', 'Watches' and several similar selections.
