Here is what I'm doing that has found this issue for the decimal point and also for lower case characters.  If the text field or label hasn't been initially set with any of these characters, the small rectangles are displayed when these are written into the text field or label.
I need to change the text string for text field and labels.  I found that if I have the label initially defined with all caps for a word and then try to change to all lower case for this word, I get the small rectangles. I can go the opposite direction with no problem, have lower case for a word initially and then change to all caps.
Also, for the decimal point.  I have a keypad for entering numbers.  If I don't have the text field initialized with the decimal point I get the small rectangle. If I initialize the text field with just the decimal point I get the small rectangles for the numbers.

The others have answered correctly, the problem is in your font filter.  It is possible to override this, and include the range you want.  You can also 'cheat' and just create a string that has all the characters, and not use that string.  
 
Examples for this can be seen in our app aria_showcase which has a keyboard entry example.  You can also see the 'cheat' in a numerical example in the aria_counter app.
