  Both Andy and Gary correctly point out the capabilities and requirements for using external sources in the PNA.  However, the subtle and yet important distinction here is that you can "ADD" external sources in the PNA, but there is no mechanism (with the exception of a use case in the IMD channel or an LO in any of the converter measurement classes) where you can substitute an external source for the role of an internal source.

for example when we make S-Parameter measurements, the source port of the measurement is implied by the S-Parameter (ex. S21 means source port 1 and receiver port 2).  when you want to make an S21 measurement, the PNA firmware will attempt to use the internal port 1 source regardless of any external sources configured and activated.  there are ways to fool the firmware, but that only works if you are making uncorrected measurements, or using a correction type that only requires a single forward sweep.

So to summarize:

- you can add any number of external sources you want.
- the source does not have to be an Agilent source as long as it uses standard SCPI commands
- you can use external sources as LOs for converter measurements and as the 2nd tone of an IMD measurement if needed.
- you can create ratio or un-ratio receiver parameters that use the external source for the sweep (ex. R1,MySource or A/R1,MySource)
- for all practical purposes, you cannot use an external source for any measurements that have a pre-defined source port (ex. S-Parameters)
