I am quite experienced in electroncs and programming, in 2000 I did a design using a XCS20 Spartan using Xilinx Foundation (schematic capture), I had to sub-contact the VHDL. I was under a huge amount of pressure at the time to get a design out so didn't really have chance to learn it properly, but now I have. I want to use a FPGA for retro stuff, nothing really fancy. It would be good to have old SCSI controller (W033C93A) already implimented so I could use them as modules. thanks in advance |

Generally your best bet for price would be to check out the latest offerings which are often subsidised by Xilinx in hopes of gaining new design-ins for their latest chips. I would also suggest downloading the WebPack software and getting familiar with it. Learn to use the simulator. I would recommend the latter, as it is easy to use and inexpensive, and has most of the kinds of partslike A/D converter, D/A converter, SPI flash, serial ports, Ethernet, USB, etc that you would want to experiment with. See link. And the best VHDL book I have found is "Circuit Design with VHDL" by Pedroni. See link. If you work through the examples, and run the test benches on them, it will help you a lot. Some of the examples with minor changes will run on the Starter kit. As for parts, the Spartan 3AN parts are good, low cost, and include flash so you do not need an external flash to configure the FPGA. I have used a few of them. The only drawback is when you do your own board, you will have to use a BGA part for anything except the smallest sizes. Some other mfrs like Lattice have parts with more fabric before you are pushed into using a BGA package. But have done a few boards with BGAs now, and they are not that bad. Most board houses are fine with them. The Spartan 6 is coming out... I was interested in them, but when I checked distributor stock, like Avnet or Digikey, I found that I was looking at 26 weeks lead time on most of them ! So I would recommend using Spartan 3AN for now.
