In a previous post I was looking for replacement loads for my 85032B Cal Kit. I found what I was looking for but they have been stored for some time in the cal kit box and are filled with decomposed foam that was used to line the box. The decomposed foam is sticky and cannot be blown or brushed away - it simply ***** up into a bigger, stickier mess. Yes, I know the manual says to use compressed air and isopropyl alcohol but this assumes ordinary daily cleaning. What about heavy cleaning of decomposed, sticky foam? Should I soak the components in isopropyl alcohol or is there a better chemical? Or, should I not use any chemicals at all? Any constructive advise will be appreciated..... |

The foam is horrid, and I'm afraid to say, I have never been too successful in removing it from 3.5 mm connectors. N and APC7 are less problematic. I have my suspicions gold is slightly soluble in that foam too. It is like a time-bomb waiting to go off. Of course it is much worst if some idiot stores connectors without caps on. Like you I have tried IPA, and found it ineffective at dissolving that foam. I have also tried IPA in an ultrasonic cleaner, taking best I could, to keep it away from the dielectric support. But the very nature of an ultrasonic cleaner means that is probably impossible. Then I tried heating the IPA in the ultrasonic cleaner, and that did not work either. Acetone does dissolve the foam, but I would think it has a high probability of doing other damage. Even if you keep the liquid off of the dielectric support, I suspect the vapors might cause problems to the support, as acetone dissolves most plastics. Old cal kit manuals, like the APC7 / 7mm 85050A manual I have attached, recommend the use of carbon tetrachloride (CCL4), which *might* work better, although carbon tetrachloride is more difficult to get hold of, due safety issues with it. Used sensibly, in the quantities needed to clean connectors, it is not going to have a significant impact on your health or that of the atmosphere. But I have no idea carbon tetrachloride will dissolve that foam - I'm just suggesting it might be worth a try, if you don't work in a company where the Health and Safety officer would throw a fit at the thought of anyone using carbon tetrachloride. I doubt anyone in Keysight uses CCL4 - or if they do, its use would be only occasionally from a secret draw they kept it in! I had an old 85052B cal kit, and was never able to clean the foam from some of the components properly, and so sold them on eBay as "for parts or repair", with photos showing the foam. A dealer in Hong Kong won the auction and bought them. I read that the Agilent cleaning sticks, 9301-1243 were very good, and having tried them, they are the best I have found. But they are very expensive. They are made by Berkshire, with the part number LT170183.15 and have 100 in a pack. (Agilent rather foolishly perhaps left the original manufacturers name and model number on the bag). I contacted Berkshire and my inquiry was past to their UK distributor, who would sell them at about a third of the price of the pack I bought from Agilent. But when I tried to buy them, the minimum order quantity was one box, which has 30 packs of 100 in them. I pack of 100 last me a year or two, so given I am 50, the chances of me ever using 30 packs is close to zero. I am not sure what I will do when I run out - buy a pack from Keysight, or pay 10x as much, but get 30x the number, and hope to sell off the rest. Buying used 3.5 mm connectors seems to be a nightmare. Seller jewels6410 on eBay often has 3.5 mm components, and she does know how to gage them. Her prices are pretty good too. Note the female contacts on the slotless 3.5 mm connectors in the 85052B calibration kit can be replaced. You need a special tool, and the inserts are not cheap, but I know a lab in the US who quoted me $100/contact. But of course BTW, the opens and shorts used in the 85033E and 85033D kits appear to be the same as those in the 85052B, but cost less. Good luck, and if you do find a solution (no pun intended), then please share it. Dave |
