Something goes wrong here, and the adaptive sweep does not converge well. As always, it would be best to upload the archived workspace, so that other users can have a look and try to reproduce or solve the problem. Without having your workspace, here are questions: Why did you limit the size of the center conductor pin P1 to the middle of that conductor? The current for the CPW mode goes to the edges, so I would expect that the (+) port must be across the entire center cenductor. The (-) ports look ok to me. Also, for the antenna function I would expect that a certain ground size is needed. Are you sure that it's enough to have such short/small pieces of feedline? |

Volker, Thanks a lot for the reply. I have attached the workspace. I had to recreate it since I wasn't able to find the original one. But it has the same problems nevertheless. Now for your questions: *Why did you limit the size of the center conductor pin P1 to the middle of that conductor? I did it to make it physically more realistic. Like I have said, I am very new at this. There doesn't seem to be a clear example around on how to arrange ports for a simple planar antenna with CPW. The original example I used didn't use CPW so they were able to get away with a simple single port. *Are you sure that it's enough to have such short/small pieces of feedline? Part of my work involves parametric study of the dimensions. I have to design and simulate the antenna with a low conductivity thin film material. And parametric study is crucial to understand how the antenna behaves. So, the size of the ground may change, it is not optimized. But when I don't know if ports are set up correctly, it doesn't really make any difference if its too small or too large. One of the important design parameters that I may need to adhere to is the dimensions of the transmission line, which also partially dictates the dimensions of the CPW. Since I need a 50 Ohm transmission line, I have to adjust dimensions accordingly. That is why I have short and wide transmission line. Do you think a wide transmission line may require a different style port set up? I remember reading that wide transmission lines can be hard to simulate.

Hi, Yes, there are these messages from the solver that warn about the electrical port size. It should be *Why did you limit the size of the center conductor pin P1 to the middle of that conductor? > I did it to make it physically more realistic. Like I have said, I am very new at this. There doesn't seem to be a clear example around on how to arrange ports for a simple planar antenna with CPW. The original example I used didn't use CPW so they were able to get away with a simple single port. If you are modelling a physical connection that touches only at the middle of the center conductor, then your approach is fine. Otherwise, I would consider the port across the entire with of the center conductor more realistic. I checked the difference to your model, and both where in good agreement up to 7GHz. So this isn't critical. For the ground ports, I fully agree with what you have drawn. No need for change. I was thinking that the antenna needs some ground counterpoise to perform well. The present ground is rather small, compared to the patch itself. Small grounds will change the antennas radiation. Your model is an interesting simulation task, because the graphene conductor is so lossy (16.7 Ohm/square). This means that any extra length of line is really lossy, and needs to be de-embedded with care if it is not part of the actual hardware. And because we can't feed across the entire width of the ground conductors, using simple reference shift in extra feedlength will cause issues as well. Really interesting and challenging, althought it looks so very simple. > One of the important design parameters that I may need to adhere to is the dimensions of the transmission line, which also partially dictates the dimensions of the CPW. Since I need a 50 Ohm transmission line, I have to adjust dimensions accordingly. That is why I have short and wide transmission line. You could do 50 Ohm with smaller (thinner) lines and smaller gaps, but with your very lossy conductor, I can see that's not desirable, > Do you think a wide transmission line may require a different style port set up? I remember reading that wide transmission lines can be hard to simulate. Yes, but you have already payed attention to that. The basic idea of placing the ground pins near the gap, and limit their size with an edge/area pin, is good and recommended. Well done. |
