I thought there might be something wrong with my calibration or cables, so I checked out S21 Log Mag, and found that trace is smooth and normal as attached (E5071C_S21LogMag.bitmap). The response you see is what I have seen before when using an Unknown thru calibration and the approximate length of the Unknown Thru is not within 20-160 degs of the expected length. Try uisng a defined thru. (yes, all a bit complicated, but after all it is microwave engineering). edit: the jumps are caused by the incorrect solving of the sign of the sqrt of S21*S12 term in the Unknown thru correction, BTW. I am actually performing a full-2 port cal with a non-Keysight mechanical calibration kit, but I do save the definition file of my cal kit into E5071C. I am not sure whether I am doing Unknown thru calibration or not because I just choose 2-port Cal from the Cal menu. But I do use a SMA adapter to connect between my cable during THRU cal as both of them are SMA male connector. When you advice to use a defined thru, do u mean i should measure the offset delay of my adapter and define it in the cal kit definition file (using Modify cal kit)? You mention that the jump is due to incorrect solving of the sign of the sqrt of S21*S12 term, will it help if I change the data display format to "Expanded phase" or "Positive Phase"?
