Initially the output freq. was set to 200MHz....that seemed excessive ... but that's because I'm used to the 4MHz-24MHz in the PIC18s or PIC24s. BTW this will not be a battery operated product... eventually. I suppose I should see what freq. would work better for the PWMs and I2C that I'll need later but I want to know people's opinions. So essentially it is better to talk about Fosc. I would say that if you do not care about power consumption you should run at a high PB frequency. If you use Fosc = 200MHz, then you need to decide the division factor for PB (Peripheral Bus). 100MHz (1/2 ) is generally a good choice as it gives a high resolution and if you use LCC library you'll have the least CPU load and high timer resolution For external XTAL, the lower the better for EMI but maybe you also use a specific one in volume and then you can take advantage of its price. I usually run sysclk at the minimum required for peak processing requirements with some headroom, then divide down the various other clock domains to the minimum they require. I usually run PBCLKs at 1:1 for sysclk<100MHz, otherwise 2:1. Note with a 12MHz oscillator you won't get 'nice' sysclk values (you can only use PLLIDIV={1,2}). If you want USB and 'nice' sysclk values you have to use a 24MHz with PLLIDIV=3. |
