请问怎么测量DUT的S参数?

您好技术专家,我打算测量DUT的S参数。
我的DUT是一块非常薄的材料,将夹在一对波导之间。
由于传输介质是波导,我不能使用默认的calkit。
因此我使用了TRL校准方法。
我读过很多关于TRL校准的技术论文和应用笔记。
但是没有详细描述如何进行后校准计算。
他们只提到了所需的标准。

  Hello fellow technical experts,

I intend to measure a DUT's S parameters. my DUT is a very thin piece of material will be sandwich between a pair of waveguides.

since the transmission medium is a waveguide, i cant use the default calkit.
Hence i used the TRL calibration method.

I've read numerous technical paper and application notes regarding TRL calibration. but non of them describe in detail how to do the post calibration calculations. They only mention what are the standards required.

TRL=thru reflect line.

Thru: i have connected the waveguides without the DUT and measure the S parameters (S11, S12, S21, S22)
Reflect: connect a shorting plate to both waveguide opening and measure all S parameters.
line: insert a section of waveguide and measure its S parameters.

next i insert my DUT and measure its S parameters.

Now i have in my possession, the S parameters (of T,R,L, and DUT) magnitude and phase, from 6-12GHz
Now what should i do next? what kind of calculation should i do to get the calibrated S parameters of my DUT.

I've read the fundamental paper on TRL calibration from here.

but it did not mention how to do the post calculations.

Please help me, i really need to know the way to get the calibrated S parameters.

  I've found a book written by David M. Pozar, Microwave engineering, 2nd edition.
in page 217, There is a section about TRL calibration.

This is exactly the information i am looking for. Which is how to do the calibration calculation.

But there is a new problem. The method mention in this book does not seem to work.

Lets me summarize how Mr Pozar steps.
The error can be represented by a pair of error box sandwiching the DUT.
First measure the S parameters for the T,R,and L standard.
From the S parameters of T,R,&L, a formula can be used to calculate the error box S parameters.
Then the error box S parameters is converted to ABCD parameters and multiply in matrix form to find the DUT ABCD parameters. finally convert back the ABCD parameters of the DUT back to S parameters.

The problem encountered is, at the first step, equation 4.78 at page 220.
There will be 2 answer for this equation, in order to find the correct answer, both the real and imaginary of gamma (propagation constant) must be positive. This is the problem, neither answer of equation 4.78 gives both real and imaginary positive. out of 201 data points that i have, 107 of them do not satisfy this condition.

Please have a look and see whats wrong with Pozar's equation.
Are there any other books or methods that shows how to perform calibration calculation using TRL measured S parameters?

how do people get it done these days? everything is automated in the VNA?

but i've found out why it didnt work.
i am refering to the 2nd edition of "microwave engineering"

look at page 220,
equation 4.77a is WRONG. there is a mistake here.

lets have a look how 4.77a is obtained. he substitude equation 4.74b into 4.76b to get 4.77a
have a look,

equation 4.74b:
T12 = S12^2 / (1-S22^2)

equation 4.76b
L12 = [ S12^2 * e^(-gamma*L) ] / [ 1 - S22^2 * e^(-2*gamma*L)  ]

equation 4.77a (as stated in the book, the WRONG one)
L12*e^(-2*gamma*L)-L12*S22^2 = T12*e^(-gamma*L) - T12* S22^2 * e^(-gamma*L)

equation 4.77a (The correct one)
L12*-L12*S22^2 * e^(-2*gamma*L)= T12*e^(-gamma*L) - T12* S22^2 * e^(-gamma*L)

have a look at the above equations, its a careless mistake in the left hand side of the equation 4.77a.
the term e^(-2*gamma*L) is placed at the wrong location.


i thought maybe the 3rd and 4th edition of pazar's microwave engineering will fix this error,
but to my astonishment, the 3rd and 4th edition has the exact same mistake. 

using the correct formular, and using matlab to solve the equation,
there are still 40% of the data does not satisfied the condition that gamma, the propagation constant to have both real and imaginary value to be positive.

now i wonder, what is the TRL calculations being programmed into current VNA?
are we suppose to just use it and forget about how TRL works?

can someone enlighten me how, or where can i find a working formular or algorithm for TRL to be performed?

do you know any software that can calculate it? or Agilent have any software that can do this?
i mean some function that will help calculate and perform the calibration?
i've look through the RF toolbox in  Matlab and unfortunately they dont have such function.
