    Hi Kevin,
The reason is because MSDOS V3.1 can only handle 640K of memory. This is the limit of the 80286 in real mode. You will also experience problems with file sharing with MPLabX. You will need to load SHARE.EXE into your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. And just make sure that your file setting is FILES=20 in your CONFIG.SYS. Ensure any command lines do not have spaces in them or the command switches may get jumbled up.
You may have to wait for MSDOS V4.01 or V5 to better handle the memory limit. Or you can use Expanded memory but you will have to purchase a copy of Quarterdeck's memory manager, QEMM.
