The buttons down the left side of the screen are draggable icons. If you, for instance, want to measure rise time, you drag the rise time icon out onto the screen, onto a waveform, and the measurement is set up for you.

I believe you are thinking about the 54810A (windows-based Infiniium).  The 54510A is the "old" scope with only push-buttons on the right side of the display.  I remember it fondly because we introduced when I worked in Colorado Springs (~1990).  Do you have any service knowledge on the 54510A?

I worked on these scopes but been about 20 years since took one apart.  The problem could be software or hardware, but I'm leaning toward the hardware.  There's a front panel housing which has the elastomeric keypad, RPG knob, panel connections.  I'd take it apart and check all the connections.

The service manual is available here (warning 27MB file):  http://cp.literature.agilent.com/litweb/pdf/54510-90903.pdf .  It mentions a keyboard self-test on page 6-18 and walks you through the troubleshooting diagram.

I can't remember the last time I even saw a 54510. That was around when I was still messing around in compiler and emulator land, before I became a scope ****. I bow to Mr. Kawasaki's knowledge.
