But I would have thought a low value attenuator on the APC7 connectors would effectively make the VNA immune to damage by static at the test ports. A 1 dB attenuator would result in a negligible reduction in dynamic range and a negligible improvement in raw source and load match. However since it would put a resistance of less than 450 Ohms across the test ports, I would have thought it would have protected the most static sensitive of device. 450 Ohms is like a short in the context of static. Twice I have suffered damage to electronic equipment due to lightening. In the first instance my ADSL modern got destroyed and the ethernet ports of several computers and a printer connected to it. One computer which was not even plugged into the mains electricity got its ethernet port damaged so I am convinced the damage was caused by current being induced in the overhead telephone cables and *not* the power lines. My house insurance paid for all new computers, a modern and a printer. On a second occasion my ADSL modem got destroyed, but nothing else, so I never made an insurance claim. I rather suspect an 8753 is far more likely to get damaged on the mains power or GPIB ports than the 50 Ohm test ports. Maybe Dr_Joel has some comments as he was involved in the design of the 8753.
