We here at Digi-Key are excited to be collaborating with our friends at Adafruit in a new video series all about The Internet of Things (IoT). This is a six-part series that covers all aspects of getting your device connected to the Internet. The plan is to launch a new episode at the beginning of every month, starting in November.
Episode One starts out with the various transport options to connect to the Internet. Should you use Ethernet, Bluetooth, WiFi or Cellular? As you would expect, there are pros and cons of each of these transports. We’ll give you a rundown of the basics of each transport to make sure you choose the right one for your use case.
Episode Two dives deeper into IoT with Protocols. Again, there are several protocols available from HTTP to REST to MQTT. Grab your favorite caffeine drink and jump into the world of acronyms.
Episode Three goes over the Cloud Services available. There are many services to help visualize, store, and share your IoT projects from big companies like Amazon and Microsoft to small ones like Initial State and everything in between. We will go through the advantages of each type of service and outline which we think are best for each type of project.
Episode Four is all about Security. How do you protect your data? How do you make sure the company you’re using isn’t sharing your data or using it purely for their own interest? The Internet of Things is exciting – but it is also a minefield. We’ll go over all the security concerns and how best to deal with them.
Episode Five circles back to the Cloud. Adafruit.io provides a less complicated way to get started with Cloud Services—and is more fun to use! This video and guide will go over the adafruit.io cloud service, how to get started, and how to make the most out of your projects.
Episode Six covers the Ever Changing Cloud. Since IoT is an emerging set of technologies, it constantly changes and evolves. In this final video, we reflect on our overall series and see what’s changed in the six months since we started this project. How do we position ourselves in this rapidly changing environment?
Hope you enjoy watching these videos and learn a few things about IoT along the way. These videos will be kept for future reference at digikey.com/alltheiot and, of course, all the components mentioned in the videos can be found on digikey.com. We want to extend a special thanks to Lady Ada and the Adafruit team for putting together a great series and learning guide for the Internet of Things. This is just the beginning. We at Digi-Key have lot more things planned around IoT, including a new IoT microsite within digikey.com. Stay tuned…
