Yes, I found one at ebay and thought I could maybe cut a corner, at least from my calibration tools expenses. However, I guess you are right and it's better to look for the decent open standard you mention and wait for an acceptable price. I later found that the HP 85031B 7mm Cal Kit includes the 85031-60001 looking very similar. That kit should be fine up to 6 GHz, my current limit. The 909F, also in this kit, has min return loss 52 dB up to 5 and 46 dB up to 6 GHz that I find way better than any of my designs, specially wide band. I just bought one such 909F. Nice work indeed! Yes, I'm amused. Looks like new. That foam padding seems to be problematic in the long run. I have seen it both at work with expensive HP calibration kits and with a less expensive antenna impedance bridge kit including defined mismatch loads from Marconi. Seeing this leads to the question, what to use instead to avoid a future mess. I was not so successful in my cleaning work so there is still "hard glue" after the "melted" foam at the loads that I don't know how to remove without risking the functionality. One other issue is the tape with the calibration coefficients. How to read it today? I haven't seen such a tape reader since I moved to Finland in 1989. |

I doubt that the 85031-60001 is the same as the 85021-60001. Looking on the web, I can see the 85031 has an offset delay of 0 for the short, which the 85021-60001 open/short does not appear to have. The open in the 85031B has coefficients of C0=92.85 C1=0 C2=7.2 C3=4.3 With the fringe capacitance being 92.85 fF, rising with frequency, I believe that is far more than you would get with a just a waveguide beyond cutoff. That fringing capacitance of the 85031-60001 is slightly higher than the open in the 85050B/C/D kits, and I can tell you that has a dielectric there. I bought a couple of other kits to complete that kit in fact, swapping pieces around. In fact, I sold the parts for more than what I bought one of the kits for. The coefficients for all the kits are on the web, or in the firmware of the VNA. My 8720D firmware has the 85050 series coefficients and my 8753 has the 85031 series.
