Microchip is following up their acquisition of Atmel by gradually rolling in development support for AVRs into Microchip’s free flagship IDE, MPLAB X.

Of note, this addition opens up the officially supported manufacturer’s IDE to Mac, Linux and Windows users, as Atmel Studio is limited to Windows only.
Selected popular parts have been added to the IDE, and the IDE features the ability to request support for parts not currently featured within the IDE.
No word yet on when Arm®-based SAM parts will be supported; however, installing previous versions of MPLAB X shows Arm® GNU and AVR GNU compilers are being installed, indicating future support is in the works.
One other development, Microchip’s newly released, low-cost PICkit™ 4 In-Circuit programming and debugging development tool also currently provides Beta support for AVRs.
