Possibly the HDD in the 16702B might actually be bad.
While I do not think that there are any remaining SCSI HDDs in stock, we could get you the manufacturers and MPN of alternative HDDs. There were alternative SCSI HDD in 4 GB and 9 GB and 18 GB and 36 GB and even 72 GB sizes..
If the HDD currently in the 16702B is a new ‘raw’ HDD, then the HDD would need to be partitioned. Normally this is done automatically by the reignite procedure. However, if the HDD is an early 2 GB one then this will not work and the latest OS for the 16702B won’t run on it.. Any OS version of 2.0 or later required at least a 4 GB HDD, I think.
Also, and *this is the most probable problem*, the 16702B may have been in storage for a long time and the Battery on the CPU board has died.
If the unit has been sitting in an unplugged state for quite a while, then the battery on the CPU board has very probably died.
This means that the clock keeping time on the CPU board has stopped. Upon plugging it back in, the HP-UX Operating System will presume that the time is the beginning of Unix time which was about 1970 or so. The first thing that happens with a reignite procedure is that many, many files are copied from the
CD to a temporary location on the HDD. And, in that temporary location, they will acquire the date stamp of the current system clock which would be around 1970 or so. So then, when it comes time for them to be copied from the temporary location to their real location, the installation will gripe that they are ‘older’ than the date stamp of the files in the real location. Thus, they will not get copied and the reignite will fail.
The immediate solution to this is as follows:
- Interrupt the boot by repeatedly whacking the ESC key
- When you get a prompt, enter a CO command to see all of the commands available to you
- The command about which you care is the TI (time set) command. Enter a command of TI to see what it thinks the present date is. Enter the correct current date and time with a TI command to correct the date The format is cn:yy:mm:dd:hh:mm:ss for century:year:month:day:hr:min:sec For example, as I type this it would be: 20:09:08:11:14:35:00
The battery is a BR2325 on the CPU board. It is very easily replaced. The originals were probably by Panasonic , but anyone’s will work. It is just a flat button battery, if I recall correctly.
