  That's a pretty old scope model, so I'm wondering if it just isn't able to handle large drives.  2GB is probably not common during its era.  Have you tried with a smaller-sized drive?

A Rigol that I have from a couple of years ago cannot support my 32GB drive that I bought this year.  I'm guessing these old models just need a firmware upgrade, but unfortunately they go obsolete and is no longer supported.

  Why can’t I save to a USB stick for the 3000A model (not X3000A)?

First, you need to have the N2685A USB host module (this is all it is good for).  You should have received one with your 3000 series oscilloscope.  Make sure that the module is fully seated.  Power cycling the oscilloscope will tell you if it is installed properly when the start up screen flashes.  You can seat the module while the oscilloscope is on, and the words “USB module installed” will flash on the screen if it is detected.  Additionally, you can hit the “Utility” hard key, then the “I/O Setup” softkey.  If you see a checkmark next to the USB icon, the module should be installed properly.  Now, if you have several of these oscilloscopes and modules, see if you can isolate the trouble to one or two specific modules or oscilloscopes.  Another thing to try is to clear all the data off of the stick.  This seems to work for the "File Utility fail" error.  If all else fails, try a different USB stick (< 2 GB).
