  I also noticed that the unit seems to have a hinge and strut module on the display side of the instrument.  Evidently, the lower and upper portions can be folded from each other but the question about the front panel remains a mystery to me.

  You could ask here or on the HP / Agilent Yahoo group how to open an *8753* VNA. The 8753 is very similar in appearance to an 8720. The firmware are quite similar, so I suspect that mechanically they are quite similar too. Although I don't know how many of each instrument HP sold, from posts I see on various forums,  the 8753 seems to be many times more popular than the 8720. Also one of the designers of the 8753, Joel Dunsmore,  is Dr_Joel on the Agilent forums.  

I expect to order some cables and a front panel overlay for my 8720D which will allow direct access to the receivers, which was option 012 but my VNA doesn't have the option. I suspect I will have trouble working out how to open my 8720D up, but I know that I will have more chance asking about the 8753. 

If all else fails, you could try approaching a dealer and ask if they will walk you through the process for a fee.

  Hi Dave:

It turns out I was a bit careless in my review of the original scanned 8719C service manual.  Section 17 does include dis-assembly instructions as you originally suggested.  

However, there is a reference made to a section front tab that describes how to split the unit.  I could not find this tab in the document.

The unit is hinged and uses gas struts.  I was able to figure out that only two screws on each side of the instrument need to be removed to allow the top and bottom half to separate.  The struts in my unit were dead so I rotated the instrument on its side and continued with the front panel  RPG (encoder0 removal procedure.  Here again the model I had did not require the soft bevel removal part of the procedure for me to gain access to to the front panel assembly with button and RPG.  After rack handles and bottom/top frame screws were removed the front panel assembly was easily removed by dis-connecting one ribbon cable.  I was able to remove the defective QEDS-8831 RPG easily.  I have a new one on order.

  you might be able to go to an auto-shop to find similar gas struts. These are used to hold up the upper portion during service.  During the orignal design, one smart-*** engineer added a row of paper teeth to the bottom of the top box, after that the code name became 'Jaws' and it stuck.
