But I think Jeff's notion of Xilinx resurrecting and maintaining the back end PAR tools for the older devices is a brilliant idea.

This would give customers a clear device support path, using third party Synthesis and Simulation tools, just like it used to be.

Given that those tools are mostly command line driven, stable, and well documented, the support overhead would be minimal.

That's because they've been chugging smoking snorting too much of the HLS-laced marketing Kool-Aid to notice the pain yet.

And isn't it odd how their quarterly results[1] still continue to lump the orphaned V6 and S6 devices in with "New Products" revenue ???

Time will tell how well prematurely dropping development system support, for devices (V4/5/6;S3/6) that comprise over half their current revenue stream, works out for them.
