    Thank you for responding to my question – no it’s because of a license for using the hightech c compiler which I was thinking is associated to that version of MPLAB (but maybe it will also work with a newer version of MPLAB – I’ll give it a try).  Did someone tested MPLAB8.9 successfully in 64bitWin10 ?

The license is only for the compiler, it has nothing to do with MPLAB.
You can use it with MPLAB8.92 or MPLABX whatever.

For the last 3 years my setup at work is:
 
- Win 10 64 bit
- MPLab X (several versions)
- MPLab 8.92
- Pickit 3
- ICD 3
 
At home I use the same setup but on Win7 64 bits, without any problems.
 
 
No issues whatsoever, even with both IDEs running at the same time.
Anyhow, the Pickit3 is an HID class device, so it doesn't need any special drivers, the default ones from Windows will do. The driver switcher does not even apply to the PK3, only the ICD3.
 
Meanwhile, relating to your Hitech licence, it should work ok with MPLab X. You might need to make/adjust some toolchain configurations on X.
The licensing is for the compiler not the IDE. It should work even without an IDE, direct from command line.
 
 
EDIT ADD: Only communication problems I ever had with PK3 were originated by the bundled USB cable (red cable). Replaced it with an high quality, highly flexible, 1,8 meters cable and no more problems. Did the same with ICD3 for the same reasons.
